Mine Risk Education for Communities
It is important that every individual be
aware of the threat of mines and UXO. Individuals
should be able to identify mines and UXO and understand
the fundamentals of how they work. They should also
be taught to recognise areas where mines are likely
to be and always be on the look out for mine
warning signs and clues indicating the presence of
mines.
It is vital for people to understand how to
protect themselves and others when they come across
a minefield. In the first instance, any UXO or
mines should be reported to the authorities. Mines
or UXO should only be marked using proper marking
procedures and should never be undertaken unless
training has been received. If an individual finds
themselves in a minefield the best solution is to
stand still and call out for help. It is imperative
to wait until help arrives.
Mine awareness is organised on a local as
well as national level. Mine education is also
organised for international staff or local staff of
international organisations.
