Flails and MDVs
Flails
Flails are used to prepare the minefield terrain for manual clearance teams
and MDD. The flails clear bush and vegetation and will detonate mines during this
process. The machines are protected against detonation and some flails have
survived anti-tank mine detonation.
MineTech currently owns and operates three types of mechanical demining
machines: the MT 325 Heavy Flail, the MT 300 Heavy Flail and the MT 140 Medium
Flail.
The flails have protective armour that is 6mm thick. The cab sits on top of
the vehicle and consists of armour that is approximately 10mm deep. The thick,
shatterproof glass is 48mm wide and is the standard of the highest NATO
classification.
The flails are capable of:
-
Removing all trip-wires
- Causing in excess of 90% of trip-wire activated mines to function
- Clearing all ground vegetation (without destroying root mass)
- Clearing all bushes and small trees
- Destroying in excess of 80% of all pressure activated mines

Mine Detection Vehicles (MDV)
MDVs are small lightweight, low pressure vehicles that are used as a
platform on which to mount a mine-detection system. They can be
deployed in a minefield with limited chance of detonating mines but
are nonetheless heavily armoured to protect the driver. MDVs are easy
to transport and repair. They can be used with a variety of mine
detection technologies making them very adaptable machines. MDVs are
often used on road clearance projects.
