Search procedures and methods

Methods

EDD are always assessed before a search begins to make sure that they are in a workable condition. The dogs are always walked and given the chance to relieve themselves before a search begins.

Explosive detection dog sitting to indicate potential explosives

Dogs are trained to sniff in and around a particular area and sit if there is a positive indication of explosives. The area is then marked and dealt with by the EOD team. If the dog shows an interest in an area but does not sit, the area will be checked by the EOD team before proceeding with a further search.

The dogs wear a harness or a working collar at all times whilst working in the field. The dogs may also be on a short or long lead or free running, depending on the circumstances.

The links to the right give further information about how each type of search is carried out.
