Building Search
A short reconnaissance of the area is carried out by the handler
before the dogs are brought in. The dog and handler will move
forward from a safe distance to take an initial look at the
target area. The dogs begin by searching the entrance of the
building first, paying particular attention to any object
next to or in front of the entrance, for example flowerpots
or door mats.
Each room is assessed individually to determine its
contents, size and layout. It will then be determined whether
or not the dog will search on a lead or in free
running mode.
The handler will pay particular attention to the movement
and actions of the dog in addition to noting the areas that could
potentially house explosives. The handler will assist the dog
if further investigation of a particular area in the room is
warranted. This will be done in a controlled and careful manner
ensuring that nothing is pulled, ripped or forcibly opened in
case of a booby trap.
If the dog sits or pays attention to a certain spot, a
mark will be placed at the point indicated by the dog and the
team will withdraw from the room. The room will then be
considered contaminated, the entrance will be marked off and
EOD experts will take over. The search of the building ceases
until the suspect item is cleared.
