Mine Risk Education for Children
Children are at greater risk to the threat of
mines and UXO. Children need to be taught never to
touch a mine. This is reinforced by ensuring teachers
and mine educators are never seen touching mines or
mine models.
Any signs displayed to indicate a minefield
should be recognised and understood by everybody,
particularly children.
Children are taught not to throw anything at a
mine/UXO and not to attempt to, in any way, strike a
mine/UXO. It is also emphasised that any object that is
not totally safe should never be touched because there
is a risk it may be booby-trapped and not to go
anywhere near trip-wires as the surrounding areas may be
mined.
A very obvious but, unfortunately, necessary
point is to teach children not to attempt to collect
mine or UXO as scrap metal.
It is vital to introduce mine awareness in the
education system.
